While most were getting a day off with family and companions and considering all they have be appreciative for, previous San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was utilizing the Thanksgiving occasion to get political.
Kaepernick, the jobless NFL star behind the notorious protests amid the national song, took an interest in the so-called “Unthanksgiving Day” on Alcatraz on Thursday, as indicated by the San Francisco Chronicle.
The tradition started in 1975 to remember Native Americans’ control of Alcatraz from 1969 to 1971, when 89 activists and pioneers from indigenous tribes protested on the little island, requesting the previous jail area be transformed into a school and social focus to respect American Indian legacy.
Kaepernick, who started the disputable “Star-Spangled Banner” protest to bring awareness to about saw shameful acts toward black Americans, was the protesters’ unexpected visitor. He disclosed to them he felt a feeling of shared trait between their causes:
“I realize that our fight is the same fight. We’re all fighting for our justice, for our freedom, and realizing that we’re in this fight together makes it all the more powerful.
If there’s one thing that I take away from today and seeing the beauty of everybody out here, it’s that we’re only getting stronger every day, we’re only getting larger and larger every day. I see the strength in everybody.
The dancing, the rituals — that is our resistance. We continue to fight. We continue to fight for justice. We fight for our freedom, and we continue on that path.”
